Missing!

I have never asked for much but I am BEGGING you now! Both Viv and I desperately need your prayers like yesterday. I have just learnt today that two of our dogs are missing since a WEEK ago! The owner never bothered to contact us we are absolutely livid. Viv is trying to get the in's and out's of what happenend and where to start the search. I could just scream but right now it takes all of my strength to keep it together! So please, please keep us in your thoughts!

Sheila, I am not too sure what list I am on anymore and what list I am not. So please post. First dog: female of 3 years of age. Responds to the name of Elektra (Groenendael). Second dog: male of 2 years of age, responds to the name Aramis (Groenendael).

Oh that's horrible news. Keep strong and let me know if there's anything you need. On Jocko's site there are templates and resources that you can download to reuse for your lost ones, and if you need any help, let me know.

And look into an email program, too .... to send out mass emails to every animal person (vets, groomers, police, school bus drivers, etc.) around in bulk -- constant contact or icontact both offer limited free sign ups. In the end, that's the stream that got Jocko home.

I'm keeping you in my prayers.

Re: Missing! new [re: Mapbella]

I'd want to scream too, Mylene.

Make sure you have the correct "call" name for the Blacks. My dogs are known as one name but are more often called by "pet" names.

And strive to learn the dogs recall response: to whom/what gender they are most comfortable, do they have recall training, is a whistle involved, fears, favorite food treats etc.

If dogs were tattooed or microchipped, get that word out to responsible folks like vets and animal control--but I don't know that I'd generally advertise that info for fear that they might be harmed trying to eradicate those markings.

Lost/stolen/missing dogs just break my heart. This makes me so sad. Of course accidents happen, but time is of the essence to find them.

I'm going to pray for the two Blacks safe recovery since that is the only acceptable outcome.

Re: Missing! new [re: Deeny_Flash]

All of the vets in the surrounding area have been contacted. Rescues, shelters, animal control and SPCAs have all been contacted and made aware of. My greatest fear is that it is all farm country up there. The dogs were new to the area and therefore could have been easily mistaken for wolves from afar. I hope that they were not shot! I can't believe that the two coucous who had them never bothered to let us know! When I called and asked how they were doing and found out the truth, I asked them why hadn't they contacte me in the first place? The response: they thought they would have gotten back by now! I am livid with rage for we have lost precious time in recuperating these dogs of ours! I hate living so far away. A group of people and their dogs will go and search the fields and knock on doors to see if anyone has seen anything!

Another thought is try to take a littermate or two and maybe their dam(s) to help track them. I had pups years and years ago and though they lived many miles away from each other and saw each other rarely they never seemed to forget each other.

Prayers for you and the wandering Black Dogs.

Re: Missing! new [re: Deeny_Flash]

The only problem with that Deeny is even a domesticated dog will become feral after only a few days. It's instinctual to their survival I think.

When Jazzi was gone for 6 weeks, we saw her several times and I usually had Kira (her dam) and one of her littermates (Daisy) with me. Several times I let them out to try to get her and all Jazzi did was run away from them ....... again instinct.

She ran away from everyone and all of the dogs she knew and grew up with. It's worth a shot, but I don't think it would work at least it didn't in my experience.

While I do agree that littermates recognize each other (sometimes good, sometimes not) and their dam (I think they recognize her smell), I don't think the dam recognizes them as her offspring. I forget but I did have this discussion with someone at length a few times.

Good Luck Mylene ....... I hope you find them or at least get news of a sighting soon. We had to trap Jazzi in a Coyote trap and that only worked because she was hanging out in the same place every night and galavanting around the same 4 mile radius every day. Luckily she was in someones backyard and was eating their catfood ........ and I'm sure many many small animals for food.

"...even a domesticated dog will become feral after only a few days..."

Tell that to the multitudes of dogs who've tried to adopt us over a couple of decades that I can't begin to count: beagles, GSDs, a number of mixes, and of course our late great Sweetie.

One we took in that people had seen for ages running loose. One night my husband was sitting out in the yard, the dog jumped the fence and sat next to him and our late absent friends. I don't buy that feral thing for a second--though I can imagine a fearful dog might be hell to catch.

I'm not able to debate this right now for I have more research to do for my own dog.

Mylene, I just thought of another longshot.

Where I live many of the local boys have motion detecting cameras mounted in the forest. The park service does too.

Perhaps you can put out an appeal to people like that to check any cameras they might have up for images of the dogs. Sometimes local radio stations will put out appeals re. lost animals for no cost.

Re: Missing! new [re: Deeny_Flash]

I'm not looking to debate, I'm only producing what my experience was .... I think it's different when a dog is seeking out a place to call home ...... but a dog who has run off is not looking for a place to rest it's head, or perhaps both dogs are panicked and don't know where they are, or what is going on and their instinct to survive will be great hence becoming feral. I saw it with Jazzi when she was trapped, she was like a wild animal in that cage and no one could get near it to let her out except me and even at that I had to slather my hands in peanut butter and lay then across the trap, once she recognized that she was all tail wags and very happy ..... but before that she was feral.

Great idea Deeny, I will transmit it to Viviane A.S.A.P. I am sure that if Elektra can hear Viv's voice she will run up to her since she has been with her from the first day she was born. Aramis should follow her. But then again, it has been an entire week they are gone and it has been close to a month since the last time they were in Viv's presence.

Re: Missing! new [re: Mapbella]

Physically double check the places that you put up LOST flyers for FOUND flyers. Staff are not always reliable about noticing that the Found Dog flyer they received today is describing the same dog that is on the Lost Dog Flyer they received yesterday.

I had a friend that called the Animal Shelter everyday for a week and they told him they didn't have his dog. He received a call from a friend that decided to visit the shelter in person. Colby had been at the shelter all week and was slated to be euthanized that afternoon.

Another friend called the local Vet office and asked them to up a notice on their bulletin board about her Lost Yellow Male Lab. Three days later, when she was passing out flyers at a Little League Baseball game, a young boy told her that they had her dog. She went to the Vet office to let them know Saylor had been found. Her Lost notice was pinned on top of the "Found Male Yellow Lab" notice that the other family had posted. Duh

Another group to let know about a missing dog are the local schools - elementary kids love dogs, and with one announcement you have 300+ dog lovers who now know about the missing dogs... secondary school kids, 1000+ students that may be motivated by a small reward. The more eyes you have looking, the better! Ask if they have daily announcements, and if a "missing dog" message could be included.

Good thinking, will do! No our biggest concern is to find someone who is comfortable to walk in a forest without getting lost. Where I live, most everyone knows how to orientate themselves in the woods but city people is different. Viviane is asking around to see if someone would not join their search party. Still no sighting of them. I am really discouraged and finding hard to concentrate at school. I have a very bad feeling in my stomach and though I am trying to keep positive thoughts, it is getting harder and harder.

Mylene, someone deserves a miracle so don't lose hope.

Don't know if it was mentioned but please also notify utility companies, and any other folks who might be near that area including the farmers, people who do small jobs for folks, lawnworkers, phone/cable folks, postal workers, the UPS type guys and on and on. On the average day there are so many people one rarely thinks of who regularly travel the roads and to peoples homes.

I'm in a sort of rural area and our local UPS guy knows more about what goes on in our area than the local gossip. He met my daughter one day at her job and he knew that we have pygmy goats and Black Dogs, and a couple of chestnut horses et al.

Put the bad thoughts out of your mind.

Believe in miracles!

Some of our friends went out and took almost all day yesterday and checked out the surroundings where the dogs could have ended up. They went from farmer to farmer but no sighting of the dogs. My fear is that they went into the woods and there are coyotes and wolves there. If that is where they went, they had absolutely no chance to survive. The search is continuing until we find them dead or alive.

Re: Missing! new [re: Fataah]

We have spoken to both the woman and the man and each time their stories differs from the first time around. Viviane and a bunch of people went out today and made a very big search and knock on every farmer's door, went to the closest village and put flyers everywhere talked to everyone they met, etc. When she had called their vet on Friday, he had never been contacted by them and didn't even know that they had dogs again. Their neighbour called Viviane tonight to let her know that there was never any dogs that were going around and the way they are set up, they would have seen them. There was only one flyer that they did put up with Aramis' picture but nothing was said about Elektra. There is too many things fishy about the entire thing.

We still strongly believe that there was an accident and that Elektra was killed and that they panicked and they either hid Aramis and came up with this idea that both dogs have disappeared or they gave Aramis away for the time being. Either way, Viviane will call them one last time tomorrow and try to get to the truth and if they do not co-operate, we will go to the police and have them charged and continue with a law suit. They have been avoiding Viviane's phone calls and I was able to talk to them twice for I went through a third party. In any case, the whole ordeal sounds and looks very bad to me. I can't shake the feeling that one of our dog is dead. I am frustrated, scared, anguish but most of all extremly sad and I am consumed by guilt.

Here in Calgary I know a woman whose dog ran away from the dog sitter while the owner was out of town. She did eventually get the dog back but it was months later. He spent a Calgary winter scrounging from the garbage and eating what he could catch. He was thin but in good health when she finally caught him. So don't give up hope.

Re: Missing! new [re: Grace]

I certainly hope and pray that your dogs
are found and returned - happy and healthy.

This probably won't make you feel any better,
but I "found" my first BSD - she was brought
to me by neighborhood children who were
afraid that the dog-catcher would get her.
Evidently, she had been living out of
garbage cans and the children had adopted
her and had been sharing her from yard
to yard and feeding her what they could
beg from their parents. They knew I
was an animal lover and they trusted
me (as a teacher) so they finally brought
her to me. Long story short - I couldn't
find the owner (not that I tried exceptionally
hard - because I fell in love with her within
minutes) ... but she had a wonderful life
with me for the next 17+ years.

I still 'look' for her owner even after all
these years - wondering where she must
have come from - she was beautiful - with
fantastic movement, wonderful temperament,
highly intelligent... everything great in a BSD. I
didn't know anything about BSDs then and
had to ask my vet what kind of dog she was.

So, sometimes you may never know .... but
if your dogs don't show-up ... they might have
found another great home... trying to stay
positive... hoping they are found and returned.

OK Viviane finally got the address where the possible sighting took place. She is going down there tomorrow. It is about an hour or so from her place. If it is one of our dogs, it has travel about 6-7 kilometres from the irresponsible owner's place. Keep your fingers cross that this is truly one of our dogs. Will give you an update as soon as I hear of anything.

Keep the faith, remember, Jocko ran over 50 miles from home during his adventure several years ago, and while it took 6 months, we got him back safe and sound!

Another dead end! I am so discouraged. These ups and downs are a killer for our emotions! The dogs sighted was a mixed breed of GSD with long hair.

Don't give up hope. Trust your gut and instincts. It's very very hard, but you'll find you have to check on each lead, and each lead is a missing dog -- I know we were able to reunite several over the course of the time, and each one of those got home. Stay strong.

It looks like we were right all along to point the fingers at the <owners> where our dogs have disappeared. It would seem that the dogs did not vanished through thin air like they would have liked us to believed but instead where SOLD!!!!!! The investigation is getting closer and closer to an end...so it seems anyway.

As angry as that must make you, at least it means they're not out there loose, injured, starving or whatever. I surely do hope you're able to track this all down and make it as right as possible.

Edited: I hadn't realized that Aramis was loose! I'd thought they'd "just" been sold and were living with other people than whom you'd sold them to. Hope Aramis comes home safely soon!

NEWS FLASH, NEWS FLASH, NEWS FLASH

One of our dogs have been sighted today. Big development in the last 24 hours!!! We contacted one of our clients last night who belongs to some kind of motor group (not the Hell Angels) but something to that effect. We told him what was going on and what helped was that he lives in the vincinity of where our dogs have mysteriously disappeared. Well less than 24 hours after contacting him, today we had our first true sighting of the male Aramis. Of course he ran away from the daughter in law who identified him. Tomorrow, a profesionnal and his tracking dog will be coming to where the sighting took place and Viviane will be accompanying him as well. Hopefully Aramis will stay away from the major highway until tomorrow morning.

Second big news flash! A woman (at least it seemed like the voice of a woman), she was trying to disguised her voice (or so it seemed) asked all kind of questions about our dogs and when we told her that the police, CKC,the radio, shelters, SPCA, etc; where looking for our dogs, she admitted that she herself had just got a Belgian that she named Princess! She said that if she heard anything or that if she saw a Belgian that she would call back. Furthermore, she said she was in the vincinity of where the dogs had disappeared. When we told this to the <owners>, their reply was that she must have our Elektra for there are no Belgians in their area. I know there must be holes in my report to you but there is so much going right now. The most important thing is that Aramis is truly alive and has been seen for the very first time in almost 5 weeks. Please keep us a little bit longer in your prayers, it seems that the end is just in our reach......FINALLY! Will keep you posted about the tracking tomorrow!!!!

Katie and Dhune both cross their front paws when they sleep so they must be on your side too.

Is the female tatooed or chipped? You'd know for sure if Princess was Elektra if she was.
