weird jaw tremble
|

My 5 year old lab just started doing something weird with his mouth. Every once in a while his jaw will start to tremble like when humans teeth chatter and he will begin to salivate. It only lasts for about 5 to 10 seconds and he continues whatever he is doing while it is happening. Does anyone know what it could be. Should I call my vet? Mandy

What is he doing when that happens? Does it happen when he encounters a trace of interesting urine etc. from a female dog? My male dog does this occasionally on walks, and I think it is a response to a scent. I think it is called flehmen.

There is no specific time when this happens and it doesn't happen very often. I've only noticed it maybe 4 times in the past year. I was reading online and it sounds like a seizure. The muscles in his face spasm sometimes too. It looks like the skin on the top of his head moves back and forth, which I though was because of his teeth chattering. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow because now I'm really nervous.

Does it look like he is in a trance when he does this (staring at nothing, not responding)? Ive seen dogs to this when they get excited. It could be many things. You could call your vet just to be safe.

My dog used to get that from time to time, usually he would yawn and then do that chattering thing. no one ever knew what it was. The one time it was bad, he ended up having a broken tooth. No one thought that had anything to do wth it, but after the tooth was pulled, the chattering stopped. He recently had it again, but only when he chewed a hard bone, so that doesn't sound like the same thing. He could have had something wrong with a tooth, but we found out he had Lymphoma, so we never got to the dentist. If you find out what it is, I would love to know.

Bea does this when she is onto a scent. The salivating increases the ability to smell and the chattering gets the smell processed in the mouth as well as the nasal cavity.
I generally associate this with the perception of pheremones. Lots of the dogs I have bred did this when sniffing a bitch in heat. I think when Bea does it, she is sensing the pheremones in the prey's urine (she doesn't do it on a scent trail, only near a den, or perhaps a marking of urine?)
It may be related to the vomeronasal organ (Jacobson's organ) that is used to smell pheremones and resides in the space between the roof of the mouth and the nasal cavity.

I know a lot of dogs who do this when they get excited or happy to see a person. My dog will do it when he sees you are holding dinner. My other dog's grandfather is a champion chatterer ... he is so happy to see people!

I did take Bailey to the vet and they ran bloodwork. Everything came back fine so my vet thinks it was a seizure by my description. Bailey does not do this around any certain smells or animals or when he is excited. He looks like he is dazed and looks at me like "what is going on?" The vet told me they won't treat it until he has more than 2 seizures a months or is a danger to himself, which hopefully will not happen. He hasn't had one since and my vet said he may never have another again. Thanks for all your replys and suggestions.

Hi Mandy,
I have an 18 month old yellow lab who had this same problem today. He would yawn and then his jaw would tremble uncontrollably for a good 20 seconds or so. He would drop his head while this was going on and then look at me as if to say "Help me" when it was done. I called the vet this morning, he said to keep an eye on him and to call him tomorrow. This happened quite often today, then this afternoon, he had one that seemed to last forever so I called the vet back and told him what had happened. He had me drop him off this afternoon for observation overnight since tonight was his late night. I haven't heard from him so I'm assuming he's going to be testing him tomorrow morning.
Can you tell me what you found out regarding Bailey? I'm on here looking for anything regarding information as to what this might be. I'm thinking seizures but then, again, it's only when he yawns or opens his mouth like when I said we were going in the car. He gets excited, opens his mouth as if to yawn and does his Warren Zevon Werewolves of London sound.
Any information that you might have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much...

My 18 month old Rottie just started this today for the first time ever. It only happens when she yawns.....her jaw vibrates for about 20-30 seconds. I have been massaging her face and gave her an aspirin. Does anyone know of anything I can do or have any idea what is causing this ??
